Virtual education has been associated, on some occasions, with economic models of scale that strengthen the mercantilist vision of teaching, thereby raising questions on the quality of the service. Some studies on educational costs associated with this modality simplify the analysis based on individual elements, such as the production of courses or the technological infrastructure, offering an incomplete and biased perspective. This study proposes to carry out a complete analysis of the costs of a virtual university using an Activity-Based Costing (ABC) model to determine the percentage of the budget consumed by each of the activities involved in the training process. The results show the significant influence that instructional design and teaching activities have on virtual modalities (62.5% of the set of activities), thus highlighting the importance of human resources in maintaining educational modalities mediated by technology. Understanding the importance of human capital and its contribution to offering a quality and innovative educational service is fundamental to consolidate a model that can improve access to education for populations with major difficulties.

Virtual higher education is growing significantly and is characterised by the need to effectively articulate technology and the academic and instructional process. This study has sought to analyse the requirements for institutions to offer a quality service close to the needs of students. To this end, a survey was administered to a random sample of 350 students. The results would confirm the strong association between factors related to technological infrastructure, academic service, and institutional support. These results can be a reference to be considered by HEIs when planning their virtual programmes.

In countries such as Colombia, the lack of coverage, geographical dispersion and the armed conflict have become obstacles that prevent part of the population from accessing university, perpetuating inequalities, and vulnerability. The results of this study suggest that virtual higher education can become a useful alternative to offer training opportunities to these populations if the right conditions are provided in terms of useful and current content, personalised attention, and accessible infrastructure. The conclusions reached can guide Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the design of quality virtual strategies.

Dropout limits the personal and social benefits of education. In this sense, states and educational institutions seek to prevent and mitigate this phenomenon through the development of public and institutional policies, however, the complexity of the phenomenon is such that these policies are insufficient and are not fully articulated with the realities of students, hence the persistence of high dropout rates...

Social networks have become the scenario with the greatest potential for the circulation of disinformation, hence there is a growing interest in understanding how this type of information is spread, especially in relation to the mechanisms used by disinformation agents such as bots, trolls, among others. In this scenario, the potential of bots to facilitate the spread of disinformation is recognised, however, the analysis of how they do this is still in its initial stages
